Middletown's Flooding Problem - easy solution

IMG00511-20110815-1012.jpg

Yesterday, with all the heavy rain we had, you would expect some flooding.  However, if the roads were cleared of their litter and the gutters kept clean, the flooding problem wouldn't be as bad.  This picture was taken along Route 35 in Middletown.  There is nowhere for the rain to drain when weeds are growing out of the drains!

Jury Duty Scam - Beware

IdentityTheft:

The caller claims to be a jury duty coordinator and that you failed to report to jury duty.  If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado, AZ and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here:

Baggy pants lead to arrest of US Airways passenger - USATODAY.com

Baggy pants lead to arrest of US Airways passenger - USATODAY.com

Pull up your pants! Didn't anyone see the old man who sang "Pants on the Ground" on American Idol? This was a black man making a point that wearing your pants so low they are practically falling off is just ridiculous. No one wants to see your boxers. If this young man had just pulled his pants up where they belong, he would not have been arrested. His mother defended him, saying he was a victim of profiling. Well, Mr Pants on the Ground is an elderly black man and I would say he isn't profiling, just making a statement to all those who still wear their pants low (don't they realize this trend was out a long time ago anyway?) to pull them up and be respectful. If the mother thinks her son is a "good kid" then wouldn't she expect him to do what he was asked to do? What does it take to pull up your pants anyway?

Governor Christie Gets an F for His Non-Effort

Our governor, Chris Christie, has been defending his choice to stay on vacation in Florida rather than return to his state of NJ and govern it while we were in a state of emergency.  He decided to take his family to DisneyWorld while his Lieutenant Governor Guadagno went on a cruise with her father for two weeks.  It seems that Guadagno's cruise was planned before Christie's trip.  I think that if the #2 person in the state government is away on vacation, the #1 person should be here in our state, and vice versa.  This blizzard is a prime example of why this should be implemented.

If you look up governor in the dictionary, you will see something like this:

governor

 (governors plural )
1  n-count; n-title In some systems of government, a governor is a person who is in charge of the political administration of a region or state.
lieutenant governor   (lieutenant governors plural )
1  n-count A lieutenant governor is an elected official who acts as the deputy of a state governor in the United States.
 from http://dictionary.reverso.net/english-cobuild/governor

When I read Christie's comments where he said he was in touch via his cell phone and that he received many more calls than he would have preferred while on vacation (had this not been such a big problem for NJ), it sounded like he was quite annoyed that he had to take those calls and interrupt his vacation time.  When NJ was declared to be in a state of emergency, Christie should have packed his bags and returned home to make sure his people were being taken care of and he should have come to Monmouth County where the brunt of the storm happened.

Instead, on his return, he said, "I would give the folks in New Jersey state government and the county government an A for the effort we put in."  And that "We probably get a B for results."  A B for results and an A for effort???  Did he see Middletown because he certainly couldn't have been talking about our town.  We had a snow plow come down our street on Monday, making one pass on our dead end street, and didn't see another plow for 6 days.  We didn't receive mail for a week, didn't get garbage picked up, and our newspaper carrier called and said she wouldn't come to our house until Middletown plowed it properly because she was afraid of getting stuck on our street.

No one forced Christie to run for governor, but when someone does become a governor of a state, they had better be in that state when a state of emergency is declared.   Instead, he left his state when he should have planned his vacation for a time when his lieutenant governor would be here to take care of NJ.

Time to Change

Yes, we had a blizzard and streets weren't plowed properly, people couldn't get out of their driveways, etc. However, since we live on a dead end street, we rarely get plowed more than once.  Well, we were one of the first to be plowed (big surprise) but there was just a car's width of plowing down the center of the street.

We pay for private garbage pick up in River Plaza.  There are currently three companies that pick up in our neighborhood.  We have had Midco for quite a long time, even though they are higher priced than the others.  If you call them and tell them what the other companies will charge, they will honor that price.  However, they eventually raise you back up to the price they charge.  They did away with all but one employee per truck - the driver - because they have the kind of truck that picks up the cans by mechanical means.  So I guess we are paying for the cost of the trucks because we certainly aren't paying for the employees.  The other companies still have the workers who pick up your cans and empty them into the truck.

Our garbage was not picked up on Tuesday after the storm - understandable.  But M&S came on Thursday to pick up our neighbor's garbage so when Friday came we expected Midco to come as well.  No truck in site so we called Midco and got their voicemail.  Tommy left a message saying if we don't get picked up we are going to change companies.  Midco called back and left a message that due to the snow and not picking up on Tuesday they were running late.  They also said to leave the cans out because we would get pick up on Friday although it would be late.  Well, guess what?  We didn't get picked up although the truck did come in to the neighborhood and came to many of the streets but our street didn't get pick up and a couple others didn't as well.  Here is our street:

No More Bake Sales????

There is something wrong when the government wants to step in and limit or eliminate bake sales in schools. These sales are used to raise money for the various clubs and organizations in the schools. And why would they need this money? Perhaps because the government doesn't provide it for the schools. Take a look at this article and see what you think.

Sorry, ma'am, your duck is dead

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet..

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman..

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $150."

(thanks, Geoff, for sending this joke!)

Not Being Irreverent

I am not trying to be irreverent here, but I do have a comment to make regarding the practice of the "sign of peace" in mass.  When all the hoopla was around concerning the swine flu, Catholic churches announced that instead of shaking hands during the sign of peace, the congregants should instead nod their heads, give a wave, something that did not involve hand to hand contact.  I can understand why they had the concern because the media made such a big deal out of the swine flu.

Now that the thought of swine flu is a distant memory, at least for now, there are plenty of people who still will not shake your hand, instead staying with the "Queen's wave" and a smile.  That's fine if they don't feel comfortable with a handshake.  But I question whether they shake hands with people outside of church.  If so, why not shake hands during mass?  And those same people who will not shake hands are the ones who are standing with their hands on the back of the pew in front of them.  Do they think the germs don't live there?  Wouldn't the same germs they are afraid of be on those pews, germs which came from the very hands that they were afraid to shake?

Why You Should Still Purchase BP Gas (don't think I'm crazy)

I am as upset as everyone else in the U.S. about the horrific oil problem in the Gulf.  However, many people are now boycotting BP gasoline stations.  By doing so, they feel that they are sending a message of disgust and distrust to BP.  While that may be true, there are other things to consider.  Who is really being affected with such a boycott?
  1. The BP station owner is being affected.  This owner has invested money and time in his business and by being shunned, the owner is suffering.  Do you think BP will help him out?  I doubt it.  The owner probably has a family to feed, a house and bills to pay, etc.
  2. We need BP to stay solvent.  So far, BP has pledged to put aside $20B for this catastrophe. Estimates are actually quite higher.  By trying to put BP out of business, are we helping or hurting ourselves?  It seems to me that we should want BP to have the money to pay for what they have done.
  3. If BP doesn't sell their gas to their own stations, they will sell it to other gas stations.  Gone are the days when you bought Exxon gas and it was gas only refined by Exxon.  The gas companies sell their gas to various oil companies, so the gas you may buy at Shell could actually be BP's gas anyway.
Now, I am not saying that I have been buying BP gas.  That is not the case at all, but I didn't buy it before all of this happened.  I don't buy from them because BP, as many companies do, charges a higher price for credit and I use a credit card for my gas.  What I am saying is that for those who have been patrons of BP gas stations in the past, don't stop buying from them to "punish" BP.  You are only punishing your fellow worker, maybe your neighbor, maybe a friend.

How is this a N-AT-I-O-N-A-L spelling bee???

While reading this article on the Scripps National Spelling Bee (http://m.tcpalm.com/news/2010/jun/04/ohio-teen-spells-juvia-stromuhr-win-scripps-nation/) I noticed the mention of contestants that came from China and New Zealand.  That makes the name of this contest a misnomer.  How would this be a national spelling bee if the contestants don't all come from the same nation?  I think it should then be called the World Spelling Bee if this is allowed.  Just my two cents....

The Scarlet Knights football program was the only state university to be ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in APR, which measures athletes' progress and retention toward a degree. These public recognition is given out each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent of APRs in each sport.

Pet Woes

Short story: Our dog is allergic to our cats!!!

Long story: Our son's dog, Faolan, had a terrible time with allergies last year. She underwent allergy testing and she has been receiving allergy shots ever since. She is mostly allergic to oak trees, but she is also allergic to some grasses, dust, mold, common indoor allergies.

Today, I had our dog, Chablis, to the vet for the same testing. She had been biting at her paws just like Faolan was, except not quite as badly as Faolan. So it turns out that Chablis is allergic to cats, feathers, and wool (which would actually mean she is allergic to birds and sheep - good thing she isn't on a farm).

We have two cats: Pumpkin and Gepetto.

Pumpkin is around 12 -14 years old and is an outdoor cat who adopted us. He only comes inside when it is raining or cold outside. He was missing three weeks ago and when he finally came home there was something wrong with his mouth. It ended up being a broken jaw that he had. So his jaw is now wired up, he had a tooth removed (he only has a few left on the bottom), he can't go outside for a month (now two more weeks to go), and he has lost 2.3 lbs (he now weighs 6.8lbs).

Our other cat, Gepetto, is an inside cat that is FIV + and has herpes of the eye. She is five years old and was found in a doctor's parking lot. She was only 1.2 lbs and she is now a monster at 13 lbs.

So these two cats are part of Chablis's problems!

Whatever happened to the days where you had a pet, fed it, cared for it, got its rabies shots and license, and life was good? I hate to see what we have paid for our pets over the last few years!

This is Breaking News?!!!?

12/01/2008-- The U.S. entered a recession in December 2007, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

"Breaking News Alert
The New York Times
Monday, December 1, 2008 -- 4:20 PM ET
-----

Dow Plunges 680 Points as Recession Is Declared

The stock markets took a fall on Monday, diving along with
investors' confidence. Confirmation that the nation is in a
recession and reports of only a modest gain in holiday
shopping sales have prompted many investors to resume selling
after five days of higher closings."

Okay, according to the news reports, it was decided today, 12/1/2008, that the United States has been in a recession since December of 2007! And now the stock market is reacting to that news...the news that is not news at all. How many Americans are suddenly shocked to know that we are, and have been, in a recession? I doubt there are many. So people, stop reacting like you have been and be proactive. Stop being scared every time the news reports on the economy and keep your money where it is, shop for what you need, do your job and do it well, and bide your time. This isn't the first recession, and it won't be the last! However, how we react to the recession will help determine how long it will last.

New Airline Rules

Not far from the truth!!

Attendant: Welcome aboard Ala Carte Air, sir. May I see your ticket?

Passenger: Sure.

Attendant: You're in seat 12 B. That will be $5, please!

Passenger: What for?

Attendant: For telling you where to sit.

Passenger: But I already knew where to sit.

Attendant: Nevertheless, we are now charging a seat locator fee of $5. It's the airline's new policy.

Passenger: That's the craziest thing I ever heard. I won't pay it.

Attendant: Sir, do you want a seat on this flight, or not?

Passenger: Yes, yes. All right, I'll pay. But the airline is going to hear about this.

Attendant: Thank you. My goodness , your carry-on bag looks heavy. Would you like me to stow it in the overhead compartment for you?

Passenger: That would be swell, thanks.

Attendant: No problem. Up we go, and done! That will be $10, please.

Passenger: What?

Attendant: The airline now charges a $10 carry-on assistance fee.

Passenger: This is extortion. I won't stand for it.

Attendant: Actually, you're right, you can't stand. You need to sit, and fasten your seat belt. We're about to push back from the gate. But, first I need that $10.

Passenger: No way!

Attendant: Sir, if you don't comply, I will be forced to call the air marshal. And you really don't want me to do that.

Passenger: Why not? Is he going to shoot me?

Attendant: No, but there's a $50 air-marshal hailing fee.

Passenger: Oh, all right, here, take the $10. I can't believe this.

Attendant: Thank you for your cooperation, sir. Is there anything else I can do for you?

Passenger: Yes. It's stuffy in here, and my overhead fan doesn't seem to work. Can you fix it?

Attendant: Your overhead fan is not broken, sir. Just insert two quarters into the overhead coin slot for the first five minutes.

Passenger: The airline is charging me for cabin air?

Attendant: Of course not, sir. Stagnant cabin air is provided free of charge. It's the circulating air that costs 50 cents.

Passenger: I don't have any quarters. Can you make change for a dollar?

Attendant: Certainly, sir! Here you go!

Passenger: But you've given me only three quarters for my dollar.

Attendant: Yes, there's a change making fee of 25 cents.

Passenger: For cryin' out loud. All I have left is a lousy quarter? What the heck can I do with this?

Attendant: Hang onto it. You'll need it later for the lavatory.

The Gratitude Campaign

Say "Thank You" to our troops by a simple gesture.

Read the story of how this started but most importantly, please click the link to watch the short movie: Click here: The Gratitude Campaign

For the past several years as I've been traveling around the country, I've been approaching Soldiers in airports and thanking them for serving for us. On several occasions I have noticed that it felt a little awkward for both of us. There are several reasons, some of which I am even just now learning as I produce this film and talk to more Service Men & Women and Veterans. But they have always appreciated being thanked, and I have always felt better having expressed my gratitude.

I started to think that it would be nice if civilians had a gesture or sign that they could use to say "thank you" quickly and easily without even having to approach. I did some research and found the sign that we are now using.
Is this limited to the military? Not at all. If you look around you I'm sure that you'll find lots of people who are serving their communities, from local to global. If you appreciate their service, give them a sign. Say "thank you from the bottom of my heart."
-Scott Truitt, FOUNDER, The Gratitude Campaign

The sign we are using is intended to communicate "thank you from the bottom of my heart. "
To make the sign simply place your hand on your heart as though you're saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Then pull your hand down and out, bending at the elbow (not the wrist), stopping for a moment at about the belly button with your hand flat, palm up, angled toward the person you're thanking.

Pull Up Your Pants! And Where Has Customer Service Gone?

Here is a major pet peeve of mine...guys who wear their pants halfway down their butts! First of all, how long has it been that it has gone out of style? Do I really want to see their boxers? And if I had people working for me in a customer service situation, you can be sure I would require that they wear their pants where they are supposed to be worn!

We went for ice cream the other night. There was someone else ahead of us who was being waited on by a teenage girl. Our turn came. We gave our order to the guy who waited on us. First we ordered a milkshake. His question - "Do you want that made with soft or hard chocolate ice cream?" Who asks that??? Then he was scooping the ice cream and every time he bent to scoop half his boxers were showing. Now we were the only ones in the store and two other kids who were working were standing around doing nothing. The girl asked me if I was being helped. I said we were together. But Tommy said we had two other things to order so if she would like to help she could. Her answer? "No, I'm good." NO, I'M GOOD??? He wasn't asking her if he could help her...so he said to her that was great customer service. I don't think she got the message because she just ignored us and wouldn't look at us. As for the guy, it must have been his first day on the job because it took him 15 minutes to make a shake and two sundaes.

The next time I see someone with their pants falling down, I think I'll say, "Nice rip in your boxers".

P.S. Kevin wants oversized umbrellas banned in NYC...his pet peeve

My Bruce Connection

Here are the reasons why I have a connection to Bruce Springsteen:
  1. We are born on the same day, September 23rd (although he is six years older)
  2. I first saw him in concert at CBA's gym in April 1973
  3. "Mrs McGrath", "Mary's Place", and "O Mary Don't You Weep" - coincidence?
  4. We went to the same beach club (Chapel Beach Club)
  5. We both were in Dublin in June of 2007

Now, I don't think any one of these is unusual, but put them all together and I doubt there are too many out there that can claim all these connections as well as the fact that we are both original Jersey Shore people...

New Blonde Joke (thanks, Jeff!)

A blonde is overweight so her doctor put her on a diet. "I want you to eat regularly for two days," he tells her. "Then skip a day and repeat the procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have lost at least five pounds." When the blonde returns, she's lost nearly 60 pounds. "Why that'samazing," the doctor says. "Did you follow my instructions?" The blonde nods. "I'll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day." "From hunger you mean?" Asks the doctor. "No," replies the blonde, "from skipping."

Only the Irish have Jokes Like These
Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp.
" What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender."
Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy.
"That little shit, O'Conner," says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand."
" That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it."
"Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself, didn't you have something in your hand?"
That I did," said Paddy. "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight."

An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.
A cop pulls him over."So," says the cop to the driver, where have ya been?"
"Why, I've been to the pub of course," slurs the drunk.
" Well," says the cop, "it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening."
"I did all right," the drunk says with a smile.
"Did you know," says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, "that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?"
"Oh, thank heavens," sighs the drunk. "For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf."

Brenda O'Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door.
"Brenda, may I come in?" he asks. "I've somethin' to tell ya".
"Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's my husband?"
" That's what I'm here to be telling ya, Brenda." There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..."
"Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me."
"I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry. Finally, she looked up at Tim.
"How did it happen, Tim?"
" It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned."
" Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me truth, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?"
"Well, Brenda... no. In fact, he got out three times to pee."

Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears.
He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"
She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night."
The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?"
She says, "That he did, Father."
The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary? "
She says, He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun...'

For All Those Who Throw Out Their Cigarettes on the Streets!

Number one: I don't smoke. So those who do will probably dismiss this. But I have a real problem with smokers who think nothing of throwing their cigarettes on the ground, out the car window, on the beach sand, etc. It ranks right up there with those who just throw their wrappers and garbage out the car window. What gives anyone the right to litter? Oh, you were finished with the cigarette? How about putting it out in your ashtray? And I am sure lots of you have seen people open their car door in a parking lot and empty the ashtray on the ground. I think these people should be fined. I would love to be next to a car when the cigarette flies out...then pick it up (I know, yuk) and throw it back in the car. Do you think the smoker would get the message?

No Whopper? Whopper Freakout

I'm sure you've all seen the Burger King commercials where they tell the customers that they no longer sell Whoppers. I think it is funny (click on the link above to see the complete video). But when you think of it, it seems that the Whopper was the beginning of the fattening of America. I am old enough (unfortunately) to remember when the Whopper debuted. The biggest fast food burger we had seen prior to the debut was the Big Mac. This in itself was way too big. We were used to eating the regular sized burger. Remember burger, fries, and soft drink for under a dollar? Well, then came along the Whopper. I can remember having it sit in front of me and thinking, "How am I ever going to eat all that?" That's the way it still should be, but we are all so used to super-sizing that the regular burger seems like a snack. Just something to think about...

Say Thanks to our Troops

Faolan in her Christmas attire

This time of year is especially hard on those who are in the armed forces and are away from home. Some of them might not get much mail and will be particularly lonely. Why not send them something to cheer them up? Here is a free and easy way to send a thank you to our troops who are serving our country. Click here to access the free site provided by Xerox.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Happy Thanksgiving

I have to write about this. It gets me so mad when I think how some stores opened at 4 am the day after Thanksgiving (some even opened at midnight!!). It is bad enough that stores have opened at 5 or 6 am, but earlier than that? The poor people who have to go in to work! If I owned a store this would be my ad:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

WE WISH YOU AND YOURS A HAPPY THANKSGIVING

SO THAT OUR EMPLOYEES MAY ENJOY THEIR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY
OUR STORE WILL BE OPENING AT 9 AM ON FRIDAY

Sorry, wrong number

While we were at the Rutgers-Cincinnati game we realized that only I had my phone and Tommy did not. Knowing that Joanne, Tommy's sister, would be texting him during the game, I sent her a text telling her to text my phone, not his.

Here is the transcript:
me: "Tommy doesn't have have his phone so text my phone"
J: "You are texting the wrong address - I don't know you" (very funny, I thought)
me: "Very funny"
J: "Seriously - I don't know Tommy or you. Re-check your address"

I asked Tommy what Joanne's cell # was and he didn't know. So I texted his sister, Margaret, and she sent Joanne's number. Well, I was off by one number and had the wrong number programmed into my phone. Sorry, 732-996-....

GO RUTGERS!!!

We were getting ready to go to the Rutgers game and I decided to put one of the Rutgers "R" tattoos on my cheek. So I went into the bathroom, peeled off the backing, placed it on my cheek, and held a wet washcloth to the tattoo for 30 seconds. I then removed the washcloth, peeled the rest of the backing off my cheek and inspected my new tattoo.

To my surprise the "R" was backward!

So I quickly scrubbed it off my cheek before it completely dried and said to Tommy that the Rs they were giving out for free were printed wrong.

He said there was nothing wrong with the R, I was simply looking at myself in the mirror! UGH... GO RUTGERS!!!

Beach Club Rejects

If I win millions in the lottery, one of the things I would do is buy a beach club in Sea Bright and rename it "Beach Club Rejects".

I went to a beach club for many years...from the time I was 14 up until the summer of 2004. At that time we had decided that the expense involved had gotten way out of hand and the club had gone pretty much downhill each summer. So you paid more and received less. We gave up our membership. The first summer after that I went to the beach twice - in Long Branch. Last summer I never made it to the beach at all. Today Tommy and I went to Sea Bright Public Beach (right next door to our old club) and had a wonderful day. That's when I came up with the idea of "Beach Club Rejects".

To become a member, you must first be disgusted with your current beach club - enough to give up your membership. This new club would be more of a co-op club, that is that the membership fees would be just enough to cover the costs involved in running the club, while not making a profit. After all, I just won the lottery, didn't I? Then we can make the owners of the "for profit" clubs cringe when they hear that their members left for a club by the name of "Beach Club Rejects".

un-jovial Bon Jovi

Now, don't get me wrong. I am a Bon Jovi fan, but I think his spat with Marcos Carrington over the name of his energy drink, "mijovi", is ridiculous. Marcos named it after his girlfriend, Jovita. Just because someone is famous, it doesn't mean they have the right to claim ownership of anything that bears a resemblance to his or her name. Many years ago there was a photo store in Red Bank named "McPhoto". McDonald's forced them to change their name to something else. They changed it to "O'Photo". Would people really think that McPhoto had anything to do with McDonald's? And would people really think Bon Jovi had anything to do with mijovi? It isn't even written as Mi Jovi - come on, choose something more important to be bothered about. It just makes Bon Jovi look foolish over something so trivial.

Day - O

Sorry if you find it annoying, but I added music to this site. It is Day-O and you can hear it in one of my favorite movies, "Beetlejuice", when they are all sitting around the dining room table where they become possessed and start singing this song. It is my favorite part of the movie. Sick, huh? Well, if you don't like to listen to it, just click it off on the control. The music is from this site http://www.jrsoca.com/index.htm

Chablis

We have a new puppy! Her name is Chablis and she is the cutest little thing. We picked her up last week at a PetSmart adoption day. She is one of 12 puppies and they came all the way from Arkansas. We have had her 6 days now and she is 12 weeks old today. Here is her picture. She gets along great with Faolan. (below)

A Day Late...

Tommy and I had an "Alohafest" to go to. This is an annual event and the first time we went we didn't know there were great prizes given to the best Hawaiian outfits. So this time we were prepared. We had on grass skirts, flowered shirts (matching), leis around our necks, leis that lit up around our heads, and more around our wrists and ankles. Top that off with sunglasses, a ukelele for Tommy, and a carved monkey head coconut drink glass for me, and we were all set. We were sure we would win first prize!!! So we drove up to Bergen County, to the hotel where the event was to take place, walked in...and looked around, only to realize we were the only ones there for the event. It turned out that we were a day late! The person in charge had sent a reminder of the date, but it was for the wrong place! Our date was for the day before, and the day we showed up, it was for an event that was taking place on Long Island. We were so disappointed.
Now we have to get ready for this year's event...it will be sometime in August! I'll keep you posted. Oh, and if you would like to see how Tommy looked, here he is:

P.S. I forgot to add that we were absolutely starved when we realized we were a day late and now we didn't even have dinner! So we drove to Menlo Park Mall to the Rainforest Cafe. This was the only place we figured we could fit in with our matching Hawaiian attire - sans the grass skirts... come on, we are corny but that would have been a little too much, don't you think?? We did get a lot of weird looks from both the employees and the patrons. But we did blend in with the decor!

P.P.S. We went to this year's Alohafest and dressed in all our Hawaiian attire only to find out that there were prizes like there had been in the past, but no prizes for the best dressed!!! We did not win.

Downy to wash your clothes???

The other female living in our house (I said I wouldn't mention her name, but you know who she is) had been washing her clothes for months with Downy while she was at school. When she came home, she said she brought a full bottle of detergent. But I couldn't find it...until I realized her bottle of detergent had been a bottle of fabric softener! At least it had Febreze in it so the clothes smelled clean, even if they weren't.

MEOW

Last night we heard our cat meowing. It was about 1 am and we thought she was locked in the closet. Tommy opened the closet door and she wasn't in there. But we still heard her. It sounded like she was sitting in the window. Tommy opened up the shade and she was by the window, OUTSIDE the window, on the roof!!! We got her in and tried to figure out how she got out there. Then Tommy checked Meghan's room. He had opened her windows because it was so nice out, but had closed the windows when we went to bed about an hour earlier. One thing he didn't notice ---the screen was not in her back window. So Gepetto had climbed out the window and was locked out, for at least an hour. She slept all night curled up next to me and today she was afraid to go near the window.

Gas Station Attendant

You know how it goes - you are in a hurry and something always manages to slow you down! Last night I decided to get gas before I drove to Oceanport to drop something off. So I went to the Red Bank Raceway (my first mistake because I don't like how you have to get in and out of the station) to fill the car up - it was on empty.

The attendant could only speak a few words of English, but so what, right? He only needed to know that I wanted to fill up the tank with regular. I gave him my credit card and he filled up the tank. But when he tried to print out the receipt, he couldn't. He came to the window with my credit card in his hand and this was the conversation:
Attendant: ...the card...not working...
Me: The card's not working? Do you need a different one?
Attendant: (as he is pointing to the fuel pump)...not working...go inside...

(this was getting like the urban legend where the attendant says there is something wrong with your card and you need to come with him - then he tells you there is a mass murderer hiding in your back seat!)

Me: I said, "you need me to go inside?"
Attendant:...right back
So I waited in my car while he went inside. He returned with a receipt for $20 in his hand (my gas was $36.25)
Attendant:...(he shows me the receipt and point to the fuel pump)...my friend...fix
Now he went inside again with another attendant. When they came out, he had the original $20 receipt, another receipt for $36.25, and a $20 bill. The other attendant explained that the pump was working, but the man didn't know how to work it. So they charged the correct amount, gave me both receipts, and refunded the $20 in cash.

15 minutes after I arrived, I finally left the station!

She Must Be Blonde!

I heard the funniest thing the other day...
Brad and Emma are a recently married couple. Brad told Emma that the battery in her car key will recharge itself when the key is in the car. So one day Brad asked Emma where her car keys were. She said that her keys were out in her car, on the console. Brad asked, "Why are your keys out there?"

Emma said, "Because you told me they would charge up if they were in the car!"

And, yes, she is a blonde!!!

p.s. this is a true story - the names have been changed to protect the innocent!
